What information does the video player software collect or transmit?
The video player software behaves in almost identical fashion to any standard web application.
It stores one cookie on the client's machine, to identify it uniquely, but anonymously. And it transmits information back about it's environment, like a standard web browser.

What information, specifically, is contained in those transmitted cookies?
It transmits the following information (which is entirely in plain text format so its obvious for those inclined to observe the information transfer that it is not transmitting personal data).

  1. a randomly generated machine cookie
  2. a randomly generated session cookie
  3. the page where the content was viewed from
  4. the URL where the media was stored
  5. information that uniquely identifies the media
  6. the operating system
  7. information about the player version used to view the media
  8. the pay per view key used
  9. All this information is stored, all this information is anonymous. The Vividas player regularly transmits back update information (around once a minute), on how much media has been viewed, and how much data has been downloaded. This is just another anonymous performance metric.

What information does The Pass It On Pay Per View collect or transmit?

  • "The Pass It On" campaign transmits slightly more information than the standard Vividas software - in that a Rights Management model wrapped around the viewing does not permit anonymous playback. Hence it needs to authenticate a client's session with "The Pass It On's server.
  • As an added bonus feature, it also sends the viewing position back to the server, so the user can stop watching at any point, and resume watching at a later time at the same point in the video! It is almost like pressing stop on the video cassette recorder, and coming back later and pressing play, except you can be somewhere else in the world.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

How do I know if the movie will work on my system?
Try playing The Pass It On. If it does not play, you may need to update your computer with new software and/or hardware. The most likely scenario is that you simply need to update your Internet browser.

If the movie still doesn't play, please visit the Vividas Suppport Page at http://www.vividas.com/support

NOTE The Vividas technology is not yet available on the new Intel Macs.

Why can't I hear anything?
First check that your speakers are connected turned on and the volume is up. Next check your headset, if you have one plugged into your computer. If you still don't hear anything then you may not have a soundcard in your computer.

Why is the movie starting part of the way through?
This is because your pay-to-view page has already been viewed in part by yourself or someone else. Do not send your link to anyone else or they may use up your view - unless of course you want to give them your viewing.

If my Internet connection fails, can I resume playing the movie?
Yes. You can access the film from where you were by logging into the member area at homeofpassiton.com using the 'Password' you created in the shopping cart website. Most likely, you created your username and 'Password' just before paying to view.

My computer says I'm using the wrong version of java. Why and what should I do?
This is usually because your computer has installed more than one version of Java and doesn't know which version to use.

To fix this you need to disable the Sun version of Java in your Internet Explorer browser. To do this, go to

  1. Tools > Internet Options > Advanced >
  2. Untick all the boxes under Java (Sun) "Use JRE (your version number)".
  3. There is no need to restart your computer, but you will need to close all instances of your browser.

I use Firefox, Why can't I play The Pass It On?
You also need to install Java. You can do this from http://www.java.com

What browser extension software is required to watch the video?

  • The Vividas player runs on almost all windows based PCs in this world, and mostly using the java technology, as the way to launch the video.
  • Where Java is not installed, ActiveX is used as the fail over option.
  • The main software combinations are:
    • Windows(>2000) + Internet Explorer (>5.5); requires Sun Java (>1.4), Microsoft Java (latest) or ActiveX Install or:
    • Windows(>2000) + Firefox(>1.0) requires Sun Java(>1.4) or
    • Mac(>1.3) + Safari(> 1.2.4) requires Sun Java (installed by default) or
    • Mac(>1.3) + Firefox(>1.5) requires Sun Java (installed by default)

What is the Java Native Interface (JNI) and why does the player software use it?

  • The video player uses the Java Native Interfaces to execute native code on the client's machine.
  • The video player requests the user's permission to run native code (outside the Java environment), and this is why the user observes a security warning prompt.
  • We do this to optimize the playback experience for the user. Using Native components maximizes the amount of compression we are able to use compressing media, thus minimizing the amount of data that needs to be downloaded to get a wonderful full screen experience. It also minimizes the amount of CPU required to display t his footage, thus older hardware can be used to watch video. It also enables the video player to leverage the capabilities of the graphics and sound devices to produce a first class video experience.

What kind of connection do I need to play the movie?
Any high-speed internet connection. Slower connections may require more time spent buffering the video; dial-up connections are unsuitable for delivery of the high-resolution, high-quality video on the HomeOfPassItOn.com site.

Where can I get Flash?
You can download the latest Flash player here.

I'm having trouble getting the movie to play
First ensure that you have Adobe Flash installed on your browser; you can click here for the installation and instructions. The movies require Flash 9 or better to run; if you do not have a compatible version, you should be prompted at the player screen with a link to the laterst version.

Assuming you have a compatible version of Flash installed, other possible causes include:

  • The presence of pop-up/ad blocker software that specifically targets Flash content. Adjust the settings of your software to allow Flash and add homeofpassiton.com to your list of trusted sites.
  • Some Internet utilities, such as Norton Internet Utilities, perform functions similar to a firewall and may restrict viewing of ActiveX controls. As Flash requires ActiveX controls to render the video in Internet Explorer, you need to ensure that the program settings are set to allow ActiveX controls.
  • If you have a Restricted User account while running Windows XP/2000 and are running version 9.0.24.0 of the Flash player, there is a known issue that may interfere with playback. You will need to uninstall Flash using the utility provided by Adobe here and reinstall using the link provided above.
